Our final 2022 league game was supposed to be Shrewton next week, but since they’ve pulled out of the league, our actual final game was away at Winterbourne.

Winterbourne is the best ground on our little circuit, an excellent track with a good flat outfield and a nice little clubhouse and bar. They’ve sunk a fair bit of money into it, and run kids sides which bring in players and funds. Much as Collingbourne are intending to do next year, their twos are a combination of keen upcoming youngsters, and some ex first teamers guiding them. It’s a good system. At the toss their captain declared that they weren’t very strong today, and if we wanted a full game it was probably wise to bat first, an offer I accepted.

Finally, the ‘kids and grandads’ we’d been promised all year, and we sort of wasted it really. Even without a couple of key players, we had the strongest side we’ve put out this year, and the unprecedented luxury of 8 potential bowlers to chose from. It’s a shame we didn’t have this side for some of the trickier games when we fielded weaker sides or couldn’t muster 11 – one of those would probably have given Winterbourne twos a more even game.

Howard and lew got off to a good start, Lew continuing his excellent form this year, Howard settling in for the duration.

There were two extra games within the game. This being our final fixture, the most league runs, wickets and catches were all up for grabs. Hakey began the game top or joint top in all three. Howard trailed Hakey by 130 for the most runs, and as his innings progressed with some assurance, Hakey began to get a little jittery that the unlikely goal was in sight.

If he’d come in and did what I did – elected not to put away an innocuous half volley, and instead swipe it inelegantly into his own stumps for a duck – his jitters would have been justified.

But he did not. He joined Howard in the middle for another unbeaten 50 in a 130 run partnership which comfortably secured him the runs title. Though this did not stop him engaging in some entertainingly puerile strike hogging in the final overs when the issue was beyond doubt.

Howard finished with a fantastic 137, comfortably the knock of the year – what a debut season – the only tiny blemish on which was being bowled on the very last ball of the innings, which I don’t think bothered him in the slightest.

Chasing 265 Winterbourne began slowly against a strong seam attack on a bouncy deck. Mark Colbourne kept in exemplary fashion, his first time back with the gloves since before covid, took a neat edge behind and conceded just 2 byes. As the game progressed it was clear that they were not going to chase the runs, which left the way clear for the other game within a game, the most league wickets. H, Hakey and me were all tied on 14, and as H wasn’t playing, it was down to me and Hakey to slug it out with 4 overs each left over the last 8. It was fun, and the closest we get to a test draw – field in, runs irrelevant, only wickets matter. As is often the way when you’re desperately hunting wickets, they just wouldn’t come. We were still tied with one each until the penultimate ball of the game when I finally got one through an obdurate lefty to pip it at the death. Hakey and Pards finish tied for the catches.

It was a really fun game played in excellent spirits, a rare comfortable win for us, some good internal battles, and some actual decent cricket. The only pity is that the season’s already over – it seems to have gone even quicker than usual this parched summer. There are some friendlies left, but that’s an early curtain on the league season. Final top five stats for the year are here.

On probably the hottest Saturday of the season, and certainly the hottest day I can remember for a DCC Saturday fixture, we entertained Hungerford II’s on the Damerham Dust Bowl.

It was certainly a bat first day. Cue Henry, the most useless tosser you’ve ever met, losing yet another one. However, to our surprise and the dismay of his team, the Hungerford skipper opted to field first.

We started solidly and at a decent rate with Chris and Lew putting on 25 inside 5 overs, before Chris perished LBW to Hungerford’s 14 year old seamer Jemima who caused us problems all day and by all accounts was one of the best bowlers we’ve faced all season – nipping it in both directions and beating the edge on countless occasions. Lew continued his good form with a solid 26 before being bowled in the 18th over. This brought the skipper, Henry G, to the crease to partner with Howard. They started to up the scoring and took us past the 100 mark before Howard was caught behind playing a slow motion sweep shot for a well made 46.

Henry continued to up the ante, blasting himself to a season best of 82 – with cameos from Hakey, Angus and the Dom-inator, and some binary contributions from Ollie (1), Pards (0), Connor (0) and Vic (1). Henry was bowled in the final over and we were all out for a very competitive 238.

We got off to a good start defending our total, reducing the oppo to 12-3 inside 7 overs and then to 60-5 inside 14 overs. Their skipper made things interesting, smashing 82 in quick time before he was expertly caught by Dom on the boundary in the 31st over. Henry then mopped up the tail, securing himself a 5fer and the team a win 53 runs. The pick of the bowlers with 5-30, expertly supported by Hakey (2-39) and Howard bowling his new seam up deliveries (2-25). Hakey’s figures tarnished by being smashed for 18 runs in 4 balls by the oppo’s number 10 – including a six smoked in to the field. The innings finishing with an Angus croc catch to tie things off nicely.

We go in to our final game Saturday with little to play for in the league, but all to play for in the individual stats with the Batting, Bowling and Fielding leader boards all getting tight. Hakey in with a strong chance of topping all 3.

Up the Ducks.

This was a day of several parts, the most dominant part being possibly the most frustrating hour and a half I’ve ever spent on a cricket field.

We went to Bramshaw with 9, including Ant who hasn’t played for 2 years and is recovering from a knee operation. Going in so short handed, we were not particularly hopeful.

Half an hour in, however, Henry had single-handedly reduced them to 52-5. Five overs later Hakey took two in his last over.

72-7 after 16.

The next over their number seven clothed one off the splice to cover. Dropped on 8. Moments later he skied one to mid off. Dropped on 11. There were no more chances after that in his 118.

There were plenty of extras and misfields though, as a commanding position torturously morphed into a big total. Where up until then we hadn’t really noticed, the gaps in the field with only 9 became more evident as the afternoon wore on and he saw it bigger and bigger. If he’d gone when he should have, there’s every chance they wouldn’t have made it to three figures.

The oldest cricketing cliché is as true on Test grounds as it is on quirky uneven forest pitches with four trees and a war memorial inside the boundary: catches win matches.

The despondency bled into the batting. Except for Lewis, who batted steadily throughout and was the last wicket to fall, hitting his maiden 50 in his best innings for DCC. Hakey was the only other score in double figures.

There were bright spots. Besides Lewis’s knock, Dave Hayter took a diving two handed catch with unlikely panache, and Henry’s fivefer was all five top order wickets, and put us in a match winning position early.

And that’s what we’ll remember – a game we had by the scruff of the neck and threw away.

H won the toss and we batted on another unreasonably hot day. The outfield was significantly quicker than the square, which was soft enough for your spikes to sink into, and not the road it looked at all. Half of us got out to balls that didn’t arrive and just popped up in the air. We were definitely a good 30 or 40 under par.

Defending a low total we bowled really well, and they were still behind the rate at half way, though we had failed to make enough inroads into the wickets at only 66-1, despite it being a clearly tricky deck and a proper bunsen. The game was lost just after though, as seven overs later they were 122-2 and it was all but done. With more to bowl at it might have been different, as we were into the tail by the end.

Last year Collingbourne was the only League game we won. It was a tight and enjoyable game, they’re a nice bunch. This year was also a fun game, they’re still a nice bunch, but sadly this time it was a little less close.

H won the toss (a rarity) and we batted first on the hottest day of the year so far. Their seamers were very decent, a couple of spinners offered scoring opportunities but also took regular wickets. I had a decent knock, and was absolutely wiped in the heat. H and Pards made efficient contributions, and then Hakey did a good job of accelerating at the end to get us up near 200.

It didn’t prove to be nearly enough. We probably needed to be closer to 300 than 200 to trouble them. One of their openers began by launching both H and Hakey over long off for six. Clearly not a fluke as he kept doing it. He may have other shots, but didn’t show them off, and if you’re only going to have one shot, that’s probably the one you’d want. It was quite a scrambling start. He fell to an excellent catch from Pards at long off, by which time they were over 50 in six or seven overs. That onslaught brought the target down to make it very comfortable, and their competent top order made short work of it. They knocked them off with nearly 10 overs to spare.

I am a reluctant vice captain. I am only captain when Henry is not playing – and anyone will tell you, a Damerham side without Henry in it is de facto a weaker one. As such, it is perhaps not astonishing, though nonetheless quite irritating, that I have never won a league game as captain.

That will never be true again.

Asked to field, I had already decided I was going to shuffle the bowling, mix it up a bit. Rather than starting with them, I kept Rob and Hakey back and opened with me and Dom. It worked rather splendidly. The first over was a wicket maiden and they’d only reached 26 after 10.

When Hakey did bowl it was eventful. He got so cross that his first 2 balls had gone for 4 and 5 wides, that he steamed in and bowled quick again. His first over was 17-2. Rob is an excellent 5th bowler, and overall the upside down approach worked pretty well.

We lost Pards early to an excellent slip catch, and from then on progressed serenely (except for Lewis’s reverse sweep, which was anything but serene), 4 of the top 5 making decent contributions, and it looked like we were going to cruise to the total with a minimum of fuss.

But that is not the Damerham way.

The set batsmen got out, and the nerves began to tighten. ‘Be a good game to win from here,’ someone said in the field. But they don’t know us like we do. Mark fell to a mighty heave. Rob and Dom looked ok for a bit, and the target inched down. Then Rob was LBW and Conor joined Dom. Then Dom got a grubber. Then Conor was bowled. Tension rose. Fingernails were bitten. Seat edges were occupied.

160-9 it was with two overs remaining when Dave joined Vic in the middle. 6 to tie, 7 to win. Heroics were required, and they both delivered. First Dave, beating a tired fielder at cow, then Vic, threading one through the cover fielders to win it, both 10 and 11 ending the game with glorious 4 not outs.

It was a terrific game between evenly matched sides played in great spirit that went right to the wire. We won with 3 balls and 1 precarious wicket remaining. The best game we’ve had for years, the most fun you can have on a Saturday, village cricket at its sparkling, layered, flawed, ridiculous, wonderful best.

Thruxton is a proper schlep away for us and an unlovely ground on the edge of a housing estate on a windy chilly day. I felt like I’d had a layer of skin sandblasted off me by the end.

Asked to bat on a greentop, Matt and Chris opened well in difficult conditions with plenty of swing on offer. They’re a solid bowling side and a good fielding unit. Matt batted freely and reached his 50 looking very good and likely to go on, but unfortunately did something nasty to an old elbow niggle, and had to retire hurt.

It was a day of injuries, one of their bats also retired hurt, one was hit by a return throw, there was a mid pitch collision and several tags from the ball.

No one else made runs except Hakey, who never really felt in but battled really well and started to take risks at the end to get the score up towards 150.

We bowled really well. Taps hit a good length and was frugal and troubling, Rob got consistent away swing. Jude ran in with proper wheels with the wind and some searing induckers, with more than his customary control of length. Hakey’s drift continues, there was a bit of wrong’un turn for me, and Conor held a good length under pressure from set batsmen.

It’s always easy to blame home side umpiring, but today we felt very hard done by with at least three LBW shouts we felt had absolutely nothing wrong with them. Nothing you can do about that but carry on, and who knows what difference it would have made if they had 789 in at the business end of this game instead of 3 and 4. Their 789 might be excellent bats. We didn’t get to find out.

We took the game deep anyway, never making it easy for them to score. We were probably 30 runs light of par, but might have got there if things had gone our way and we were able to apply that pressure to the tail instead. They were a friendly bunch and it was played in good spirit, and they knocked them off in the end with 5 overs grace.

It’s been over a year since we won a league game. Collinbourne. June 5 2021. Who also went down last year, and are currently unbeaten and top of this league. (We play them again on the 9th of July. Should be interesting.)

We were invited to bowl on what was possibly the best track of the year so far, with reliable bounce and decent carry, though neither us nor Joel thought it looked like much under steel grey clouds. Shows what we know.

It was a game of debuts (or deboos, as I have Jeremy Coney in my ears this month). One time Wednesday regular Dee made his Saturday Damerham deboo, on loan from a cancelled game at Cranbourne. A mate of Lew’s, Varshan, who looks a capable cricketer and appears to be able to actually field, will hopefully play some more for us. Also on Damerham deboo was Hakey’s left arm spin, as he’s now an old man, which on this showing is likely to be fruitful, coming as it did with prodigious drift. The game also saw a maiden league wicket for Conor, LBW, bowled Ings, the first of many, no doubt. A spirited cameo from their number 8 was the highlight of their innings, which included a top score from extras on 39, in a total of 119.

The chase was, for once, relatively serene and tension free. I had quite forgotten. Here the highlight was undoubtedly Dom getting bowled off a beamer no ball, and then carving the next ball over extra cover with some panache, which would have been an audacious six on any strip but the farthest. The bowling after the openers was of cricket tea buffet standard, and Henry tucked in with his customary gusto, and set about winning it in both sixes and short order.

We won a game. What a blessed relief.

Until a few years ago we used to play in the National Village Cup. With no hope of ever progressing beyond the first or (once, I think) second round, it was fun occasionally to face very good bowling attacks giving no quarter. Outside of that competition, I don’t remember a better bowling attack coming to Damerham.

We have faced better individual bowlers, definitely. Proper quicks. Serious spinners. But not a team with six seamers and no discernible drop in quality between them. The only difference was which way it was swinging. Their fifth and sixth bowlers could comfortably open for any team in the two leagues above us. We know. We’ve played most of them.

In most village cricket you expect tidy bowling to the openers, and eventually there will be more loose balls to hit as the game goes on. I don’t think their loose ball count made it into double figures.

We did not have a strong side and did not expect to win. Neither did we expect to be so efficiently tied down by a division six attack. The lowest league always used to be known as the ‘kids and grandads’ league. Well the grandads have retired, and the kids are now competent twenty-somethings.

Chris batted with patience for some hard fought runs, but no one else could do the same, bar an enjoyably spirited cameo from Dom at the death, and we had nothing like enough to bowl at, even though an occasionally spiteful wicket was always going to offer chances.

The main highlight of the day came from Waz, who produced two genuine screamers at gully. It’s taken this long to work out that if he hasn’t got time to think, he can’t croc. Never stand at mid-off again Mark.

A few years ago I had a urinary tract infection. Turned out to be antibiotic resistant eColi. I had a fever and was hallucinating and needed to wee all the time but the pain of weeing was so bad I passed out on the loo. That was a Saturday I really struggled to enjoy.

This Saturday was not that bad.

But it had a damn good try.

Friday we had 11. Then 10. Saturday a flat tyre meant nine. And we were crucially short of bowlers. The recent rule changes in the league to 40 overs max eight means you must have a minimum of 5 bowlers if they all bowl a full spell, ideally six or seven to give you some options. We had three what you might call regular full spell options.

They were 100-3 after 21 overs. Not bad. The next 16 overs did not go well. They declared on 320-3 after 37.1 overs, after the second bat had got to his ton.

It was like going to a teenage party you’ve been looking forward to, but then the girl you have a crush on gets off with someone else, and you just want to leave, but you can’t, so you spend an hour wallowing, until you get a snap of perspective and then it’s quite funny.

Bright side:

·      Conor made his DCC league debut at 14 and did fantastically well. He bowled well and batted with patience and timing. His partnership with Hakey saw us to the 150 landmark. He showed great temperament.

·      The batting was not that awful. Dave and Hakey batted well in a partnership that was decent by any standards.

·      Matt, Pards and Vic gamely stepped up to combine as ‘The Fifth Bowler’.

·      The guy who made 150 was dropped on about 10. If we’d batted first (we really need to win a toss) it would have been a normal game. Their bowling was nothing special.

·      Oddly, for a game we felt totally beat up in, they did not get maximum points and we emerged with five. We’ve had much narrower losses with worse points results.

We not only had 11 but a pretty promising 11, with bowling options and what on paper seemed a pretty capable batting order.

Last week we expected to get thrashed and did better than we thought. This week we had reasonable hopes of winning, got ourselves into a winning position, and threw it away.

Broughton had a decent top order which was largely kept in check in the first half of their innings by a tidy bowling effort all round. They were four down for under 80 at drinks. A few overs later they were six down for a hundred, and we had a good chance of curtailing them to low three figures. Their number four was still in though and batted very well for his 75, mangling a few previously decent looking figures before he was neatly stumped charging a leg break that went past his outside edge. The last two went without adding to the score to complete a pleasing five-fer for yours truly.

160 was a good 30 more than we felt they should have got, but still extremely chasable on a good batting wicket and the fastest Damerham outfield I’ve seen in May.

Chris and Lew started steadily at around three an over, a nice platform to push on from. But we did not push on. We went from 34-0 to 43-5 in seven overs. That’s where we lost this game. It still looked on for a while. Hakey batted with good aggression, and took an over for 20, which eased the scoreboard pressure. Pards and Angus almost looked like bringing it home for a while too.

But the middle collapsing like a bake-off disaster had simply left too much to do, and we fell short by a couple of dozen.

Last Sunday we had the Damerham v Damerham game with 20 of us and half a dozen lobsters. The most popular phrase at the end of which was ‘I can’t do the first game but I can do the second.’

By the middle of the week we had six. After some actual begging, a few – Rob, Howard, Ross Mac, Mark C – managed to rearrange their Saturdays to become available.

For a fleeting moment there we were up to 10, but then Jon got covid and we were back to nine again. But we had avoided the ignominy of having to cry off a league game and the -20 points that goes with it, something we have never done in my time at the club, and let’s hope we never stoop to.

Fully expecting a thumping playing away with nine in the first game of the season, a hard fought loss feels like a tremendous result.

I lost a toss I was desperate to win, and we were asked to bowl. Amport is a lovely isolated country ground but very difficult to find, and the auspices continued to rack up as we straggled in late and had to wait for the requisite minimum seven of us to arrive before the game could start.

A highly depleted attack did pretty well, but they were 85 without loss and it was all looking fairly ominous about 15 overs in. They fell from that to 101-7 in fairly quick order (including my first double wicket maiden I think?! I’m sure I’d remember...) but they had a very waggy tail that got them up to 185 before we could remove it. The gaps in the field with nine become more telling as legs get tired.

We started slowly but steadily, and it did the job of seeing off the better bowlers. Howard batted very nicely for 50 on an excellent debut (to go with a tidy spell and a direct hit run out) and there was a period towards the end of the chase when it actually looked on, but it was always a slim chance.

Contrary to expectation it was a very enjoyable game of cricket. Bowling them out was a great effort, and a chase that was alive until a few overs out for a respectable nine point loss is so much better than feared, it almost feels like a win.
